Fly tying the Zonker Fly video:
Zonker Fly Step-by-Steps:
Tying The Zonker Step 1 of 10 Start the thread at the front of the hook and wrap back to the bend.
Tying The Zonker Step 2 of 10 Cut and flatten a piece of mylar tubing so it is just a bit longer than the hook shank. Fray the end of the tubing with your finger. Push the tubing over the shank to the bend.
Tying The Zonker Step 3 of 10 Bind the tubing down tightly around the shank at the bend forming a narrow band of thread to secure.
Tying The Zonker Step 4 of 10 Wet your fingers and part the hair at the end of a rabbit strip. Place the part above the thread band and bind the strip in place at the bend of the hook.
Tying The Zonker Step 5 of 10 Whip finish the thread on top of the thread band at the bend (use an extended reach Whip Finisher or a hand whip finish).
Tying The Zonker Step 6 of 10 Start the thread right over the end of the mylar just behind the hook eye and bind it down tightly.
Tying The Zonker Step 7 of 10 Clip the ragged ends of the tubing at the eye as close as you can and build a smooth thread base over the stubs.
Tying The Zonker Step 8 of 10 Part the hair at the front of the strip so the bare spot lines up with the eye of the hook and bind the rabbit in place on the top of the hook with several tight turns of thread.
Tying The Zonker Step 9 of 10 Clip the excess rabbit strip as close as you can and build a smooth thread head over the end. Whip finish and clip the thread.
Tying The Zonker Step 10 of 10 Press an adhesive eye against each side of the fly near the front. Coat the head and the front edge of the eyes with a light coat of epoxy.
